Challenge Bank   Limeade Tips

You can burn the same number of calories in half the time by climbing stairs versus going on a brisk walk. Why? Walking up stairs is a more intense activity and increases your heart rate faster than walking alone.

Fortunately, it's pretty easy to find stairs — no gym membership required.

Your Challenge: On at least 5 days each week, spend a solid 5-minutes walking stairs. (By the end of each week those 25 minutes could mean an extra 250-calories burned.)

163 floors make up the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, at 2,723 ft tall. By comparison, the Empire State Building is just 102 stories at 1,454 ft tall.

Want more from your minutes?

  • Take the stairs two at a time for a better leg and glute workout.
  • Find a staircase that you can go UP for a continuous five minutes. Going down doesn't offer the same calorie-burn benefits.
  • Do it with a friend. You'll probably be more likely to go over the 5-minute mark without even noticing.
  • Run stairs at the local high school or park (make sure you stick close to the handrail for safety).
